Making the Most of Wilderness Camping Sites

By: Rolland Meigs

If you love the outdoors similar to I do, I'm certain you will love going camping at remote camp sites. Be it a weekend retreat, with merely you and your companion, or a whole family with little ones and your pets, the experience will last a life time. Late spring to early fall would be the best period to take your camping holidays unless of course you might be into winter camping. I am not, something about sleeping while in the snow just does not set well with me.
Now there are numerous ways to set up at the different camping sites. If there are actually roads that come into the camp site, I have acquaintances that transport their 5th wheel trailers and live like kings and queens. They even have satellite receivers so they don't pass up the ball or hockey game. A few like me, go a little more primitive, I utilize a 16 ft. cargo trailer. I pack my ATV's inside the trailer, then when I get to the site I unload the ATV’s and set the trailer up for me and my guess to sleep in. I feel safer by doing this in bear country.
Also when I was younger I have slept in the back of my pick-up that features a cap on the truck. For the brave at heart there’s always tent sites and in many cases merely a canvas that can be stretch out above top you, and sleep in your sleeping bag underneath.
What Is Required At A Isolated Camping Site?
A few of the things you will certainly not find at a wilderness site is running water, restrooms or showers. But that’s okay because where I regularly camp in Northern Ontario it is generally in one of the many lake camp sites. That provide you with most of the water you require to bathe in. Simply jump in. So far as a toilet goes there is a large woods all-around you. Even though several people who make use of these sites yearly have erected out houses and leave them there for the following years use.
In years gone by we would just drink out of the lake, they where crystal clean. However at the moment most campers bring water with them to drink. Well not just water, they're going to bring along some other drinks for their journey north. But for all your other requirements for water, the lake water is simply adequate. If you fail to remember the drinking water merely boil the water for a short time ahead of the time before you need it.
The great thing of using a cargo trailer designed for camping, is you can load all your supplies inside it until you get to camp. Next simply unload then set up in the camp site. You'll have to don't forget to have pots and pans with you. Both for cooking and cleaning up following the meal. A rope that can be used for a clothes line can be very useful. One must always have a very good amount of toilet paper on hand, although in a pinch I have used vegetation. Toilet paper is a great deal nicer though.
For food i bring a lot of canned food. The only thing is do not forget the can opener. Using an axe to open cans leaves a large number of metal burrs which might bite you. What's more bring a lot of clothes. Make sure you've gotten clothing for all season's with you. I have been camping during May and it has been snowing, and the very same time the following year it could be in the 90's. Therefore be prepared.
During the evening its always nice to have a campfire. So you will need an axe or chainsaw. Usually you do not need to worry about firewood because the woods are full of dead trees. Also its nice if you bring matches so you don't have to rub two sticks together. It's never worked for me yet. At the campfire it can be pleasurable to cook some hotdogs or marshmallows over the campfire consequently bring plenty of supplies intended for that.
The other things you may want to think about bringing would be a battery operated radio, cards, flashlight, a few cold pops for the card game. However after you go for a few times you'll know very well what you'll want to bring with you on your next wilderness camping trip.
